El modelo su(2) forma parte de los llamados m\u00e9todos algebraicos, es puramente fenomenol\u00f3gico y hace uso de las t\u00e9cnicas matem\u00e1ticos de la teor\u00eda de grupos. Esta teor\u00eda proporciona un conjunto de procedimientos que se utilizan para el ajuste y la predici\u00f3n del espectro vibracional y para la obtenci\u00f3n de autoestados del problema. Su metodolog\u00eda consiste en sustituir la forma de hamiltoniano vibracional molecular en el espacio de fases, con modos locales descritos por potenciales anarm\u00f3nicos y acoplados entre s\u00ed mediante ciertas interacciones, por un hamiltoniano expresado en funci\u00f3n de los generadores del algebra de su(2), en el cual es posible reflejar la simetr\u00eda discreta de la molecula.  en cambio, el formalismo de los estados localizados en el espacio de configuraci\u00f3n se aplica el an\u00e1lisis de las transiciones vibracionales y vibr\u00f3nicas. El metodo consiste en la introducci\u00f3n de una base de autoestados de una variable concreta en el espacio de coordenadas. Esta base se define por una transformaci\u00f3n ortogonal apropiada a partir de la base finita de autoestados ligados del hamiltoniano. Los estados localizados simplifican el c\u00e1lculo de las integrales de los elementos de matriz de operadores de inter\u00e9s desarroll\u00e1ndolas mediante expresiones anal\u00edticas cerradas con un buen grado de aproximaci\u00f3n.  a pesar de las diferencias entre ambos m\u00e9todos, el modelo su(2) y el formalismo de los estados localizados pueden aplicarse de forma combinada en el estudio de mol\u00e9culas poliat\u00f3micas.
