El enorme ancho de banda de las fibras opticas permite la transmisi\u00f3n de enormes cantidades de datos digitales y las redes opticas actuales, que llevan a cabo solo una fraccion de las promesas de la tecnolog\u00eda, ya transmiten datos la velocidad de varios gigabits por segundo.  dentro de un sistema de comunicaci\u00f3n optica completa, se requieren dispositivos de altas prestaciones para el tratamiento de los datos para alcanzar velocidades de transmision altas. Esto se consigue habitualmente de la mejor manera actuando directamente sobre la onda luminosa que transmite los datos, mas que sobre las corrientes electricas usadas para generar o procesar el flujo de datos. Estas partes electricas pueden resultar un impedimento en redes de alta velocidad, ya sea porque limiten la velocidad maxima de bits posible o porque se necesite tecnolog\u00edas de microondas y electronicas de alimentacion cara y completa. Los dispositivos normalmente utilizados en estos sistemas son los moduladores de luz externo. Estos moduladores actuan sobre la onda luminosa a traves del efecto electro-optico inducido por un campo electrico externo en la banda de frecuencia de microondas aplicado a unos electrodos adecuados. La utilizacion de la modulaci\u00f3n externa permite obtener un mayor modulacion conservando la pureza de la se\u00f1al optica ya que se utiliza un laser de onda continua.
