Una de las soluciones posibles es la obtenci\u00f3n de plantas resistentes a la salinidad y sequ\u00eda. la levadura saccharomyces cerevisiae se utiliza en la actualidad como sistema modelo para conseguir comprender los mecanismos moleculares involucrados en la respuesta al estr\u00e9s osm\u00f3tico. Cuano una c\u00e9lula es sometida a un estr\u00e9s salino se defiende produciendo osmolitos como el glicerol para recuperar la turgencia, y eliminando del citoplasma aquellos cationes que ejercen un efecto t\u00f3xico como na+ y li+. En este proceso de defensa hay  involucrados receptores que transmiten la se\u00f1al hasta el n\u00facleo a trav\u00e9s de prote\u00ednas citoplasm\u00e1ticas, siendo la \u00faltima consecuencia el aumento de la expresi\u00f3n de genes de defensa. Distintas rutas de transducci\u00f3n de se\u00f1al intervienen en el estr\u00e9s osm\u00f3tico, siendo la ruta hog la mas estudiada y comprendida actualmente en el caso de la levadura. La ruta hog est\u00e1 compuesta por una cascada de map quinasas y regula la expresi\u00f3n de genes de defensa como son ena1(bomba de na+), ctt1 (catalasa) y hsp12 (protector contra el calor). tambi\u00e9n la prote\u00edna quinasa a (pka) se ha relacionado con la respuesta a distintos tipos de estr\u00e9s, entre ellos el estr\u00e9s osm\u00f3tico. En otros genes de defensa la ruta que regula la transcripci\u00f3n es desconocida.  hal1 es una prote\u00edna con un papel importante en la homeostasis de iones, por sobreexpresi\u00f3n confiere tolerancia al na+ y a otros cationes t\u00f3xicos a trav\u00e9s de una activacion del transporte de k+ y consiguiente depolarizaci\u00f3n. adem\u00e1s la expresi\u00f3n de hal1 esta regulada por la
