En el organismo, actuan aumentando el metabolismo basal, regulando la funcion de otras hormonas (gh,adrenalina, insulina), e interviniendo en el desarrollo y diferenciacion del sistema nervioso central. Son producidas en la gl\u00e1ndula tiroides, y su regulaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 mediada por tirotropina, la cual es a su vez es inducida por el factor liberador de tirotropina en el cerebro.  la carencia de hormonas tiroideas produce la enfermedad conocida como hipotiroidismo, que si se da en adultos es una patolog\u00eda reversible, pero si acontece durante el desarrollo (cretinismo endemico, debido a la falta de yodo,hipotiroidismo congenito, debido a falta de funcion tiroidea fetal, o hipotiroxinemia materna, debida a falta de funcion tiroidea materna) produce da\u00f1os irreversibles.  el oxido nitrico es una peque\u00f1a molecula gaseosa de libre difusi\u00f3n, con propiedades de los radiales libres, que es generada de esquimolarmente con l-citrulina a partir de l-arginina por las diferentes isoformas de la oxido nitrico sintasa (neuronal, inducible y endotelial). En el sistema nervioso central regula el flujo sanguineo cerebral, participa en la defensa ante las infecciones en los procesos de plasticidad neuronal, aprendizaje y memoria, y se le reconocen propiedades de neurotransmisor atipico, ademas, participa en procesos de muerte celular programada.  el oxido nitrico es un gas muy reactivo que puede reaccionar con el ani\u00f3n super\u00f3xido, producido por la oxidaci\u00f3n de mol\u00e9culas end\u00f3genas, para producir peroxinitritos, que son capaces de nitrar residuos de tirosina de diferentes proteinas. Este fenomeno parece estar relacionado con procesos inflamatorios y degenerativos, aunque tambien se da en condiciones normales. la deteccion de su presencia puede ser pues considerada como un
