Fue aislado en 1970 por said y mutt a partir del intestino delgado porcino.  se ha encontrado vip inmunorreactivo en casi todo el organismo, con un amplio espectro de acciones biol\u00f3gicas, lleg\u00e1ndose a considerar como un neurop\u00e9ptido con funciones neurotrasmisoras y neuromoduladoras (goyal et al, 1980). Caracteriz\u00e1ndose receptores para vip en numerosas zonas del snc (staun-olsen et. Al., 1982).  varios estudios han identificado receptores espec\u00edficos de alta afinidad en diversas c\u00e9lulas del sistema inmune (guerrero et al., 1981; viik et al., 1985; calvo et al., 1986a; segura et al., 1991). Dichos receptores han sido caracterizados funcionalmente usando 125 i-vip como radioligando en experimentos de uni\u00f3n y molecularmente mediante experimentos de \u00abcross-linking\u00bb covalente. Se ha evidenciado que la acci\u00f3n del vip esta mediada por la activaci\u00f3n de la adenilato cilasa, produci\u00e9ndose un incremento de los niveles intracelulares de ampc (guerrero et al., 1981; ottaway et al., 1983; calvo et al., 1986 a; segura et al., 1992 a; sakakibara et al., 1994). Diversos trabajos en ratones han demostrado que el vip modula diferentes funciones de c\u00e9lulas del sistema inmune de este animal (ottaway y greemberg, 1984; stanisz et al., 1986);ottaway et al., 1987), as\u00ed como demuestran  la existencia de receptores para vip en diversas c\u00e9lulas inmunes del rat\u00f3n (ottaway y greeberg, 1984; blum et al., 1992).  por otra parte, han sido descritos diferentes anatagonistas para vip, y se han realizado estudios para demostrar este efecto antagonista en diferentes \u00e1organos de diversos animales (pando et al,m 1986; blanck et al., 1990; espat et al., 1995).  en el presente trabajo se han caracterizado por primera vez receptores para vip en macr\u00f3fagos peritoneales de rat\u00f3n. Demostr\u00e1ndose, que estos receptores est\u00e1n acoplados a la denilato ciclasa.
