El proceso implica que la envuelta lip\u00eddica del viri\u00f3n debe fundirse con la membrana plasm\u00e1tica de la c\u00e9lula a infectar. La prote\u00edna integral de membrana gp41 o tm es la encargada de catalizar la fusi\u00f3n. En la regi\u00f3n pr\u00f3xima a la membrana del ectodominio de la subunidad gp41 se localizan los ep\u00edtopos reconocidos por los anticuerpos 2f5 y 4e10. Dichos anticuerpos neutralizan eficientemente un amplio espectro de cepas vih, por lo que existe un considerable inter\u00e9s por entender el mecanismo subyacente a su actividad. La regi\u00f3n reconocida por estos anticuerpos se asocia a membranas y las desestabiliza de forma modulada por el colesterol y la esfingomielina, por lo que se postula que durante el proceso de fusi\u00f3n se inserta en la envuelta y promueve alteraciones en la estructura de bicapa que se requieren para la fusi\u00f3n. La actividad neutralizante de los anticuerpos 2f5 y 4e10 requiere de su capacidad de unir y bloquear los ep\u00edtopos inmersos en la membrana tipo raft del viri\u00f3n. Por tanto dichos anticuerpos deben combinar la capacidad para interaccionar  superficialmente con membranas con la capacidad para reconocer los ep\u00edtopos gp41, tanto en soluci\u00f3n como en sus versiones inmersas en membrana. Dicha caracter\u00edstica explicar\u00eda el mecanismo de neutralizaci\u00f3n que nosotros denominamos de \u00abamarre-retenci\u00f3n\u00bb : una vez reconocido el ep\u00edtopo, su posterior
