Estas respuestas celulares pueden ser muy diferentes en funci\u00f3n del origen y de la duraci\u00f3n del da\u00f1o producido, variando desde la inducci\u00f3n de parada del ciclo y reparaci\u00f3n del material gen\u00f3mico, hasta la apoptosis en aquellos casos en los que el da\u00f1o es tan grave que constituye un riego para la integridad celular. Dos de las prote\u00ednas que juegan un papel fundamental en la coordinaci\u00f3n de las diferentes respuestas producidas por estr\u00e9s son la quinasa p38 mapk y la prote\u00edna supresora de tumores p53. La activaci\u00f3n de estas prote\u00ednas suele estar asociada a la fosforilaci\u00f3n de sustratos espec\u00edficos por parte de p38\u00c2\u00bf mapk, as\u00ed como a la activaci\u00f3n de genes diana por parte de p53. Con el fin de comprender la especificidad de las respuestas mediadas por p38 mapk, hemos identificado y caracterizado un nuevo sustrato de esta quinasa al que hemos denominado p18hamlet. Esta prote\u00edna media algunas de las respuestas celulares dependientes de p53. De hecho en respuesta a cisplatino o luz ultravioleta, p18hamlet se estabiliza de manera transitoria e incrementa la capacidad de p53 de transactivar promotores pro-apopt\u00f3ticos como noxa o puma. A trav\u00e9s de este mismo mecanismo, p18hamlet media el aumento de expresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna inhibidora del ciclo celular p21cip1 en respuesta a radiaci\u00f3n
