Se determina que la diabetes provoca una disminucion en el numero de receptores de vip, y una menor eficacia de la adenilil ciclasa, asi como una menor actividad de las proteinas g que intervienen en el proceso de transduccion.  el numero de receptores es recuperable parcialmente con tratamiento insulinico, mientras que no lo es la perdida de eficacia de la adenilil ciclasa, y solo se recupera en parte algunas de las proteinas g. Cuando se activa el sistema por otro receptor como los beta-adrenergicos, el comportamiento es distinto, debido, al menos parcialmente, a una mayor rigidez de la membrana
