Tetranychus urticae tiene un alto potencial reproductivo y muestra una alta tendencia a la agregaci\u00f3n. Habita en el env\u00e9s de las hojas, desde donde absorbe el contenido de las c\u00e9lulas superficiales de las mismas y las cubre con una densa tela. Esta tela protege a los individuos presentes en la colonia frente a depredadores, aplicaciones acaricidas y condiciones clim\u00e1ticas adversas, lo cual dificulta su control y les permite estar particularmente adaptados a ambientes c\u00e1lidos y secos. Su comportamiento alimenticio reduce el contenido nutricional de las hojas y altera la normal respiraci\u00f3n y transpiraci\u00f3n de la planta. Adem\u00e1s, elevadas infestaciones de t. Urticae combinadas con estr\u00e9s h\u00eddrico pueden desencadenar serias defoliaciones. Las hojas infestadas toman, en la zona afectada, una coloraci\u00f3n amarillo-herrumbrosa y se deforman con una concavidad caracter\u00edstica en el env\u00e9s, que se corresponde con un abombamiento, tambi\u00e9n amarillento, en el haz. En los frutos  provocan cicatrices caracter\u00edsticas que se inician desde la zona estilar o peduncular y que deprecian su valor comercial. hasta la fecha el control de este fit\u00f3fago se ha basado, principalmente, en el uso de acaricidas. Sin embargo, esta medida de control no muestra siempre la eficacia deseada y, adem\u00e1s, puede acarrear otros problemas de tipo social, econ\u00f3mico y medioambiental. Por ello, el desarrollo de m\u00e9todos de control alternativos es imperativo. Dentro del programa de manejo integrado de plagas en c\u00edtricos, se ha puesto mucho \u00e9nfasis en la implementaci\u00f3n de medidas de control de t. Urticae sostenibles y respetuosas con el medio ambiente. El objetivo general de esta tesis ha sido la mejora del control biol\u00f3gico de t.
