Nuestro objetivo fundamental ha sido estudiar el posible papel modulador de la taurina sobre los potenciales provocados sinapticamente en la region ca1 del hipocampo de la rata. Los experimentos han sido realizados \u00abin vitro\u00bb, utilizando rodajas transversales del hipocampo. Se han examinado los registros extracelulares e intracelulares. La aplicacion de taurina (10 mm, 30 minutos) produjo dos acciones opuestas sobre las respuestas sinapticas: 1) un descenso del potencial excitador postsinaptico provocando por la activacion de receptores gabaa y 2) una potenciacion duradera de los potenciales sinapticos independiente de los receptores gabba. Esta segunda accion esta producida a su vez por dos factores: un aumento de la excitabilidad axonal y un incremento en la eficacia sinaptica. Estas acciones parecen depender de la captacion previa de la taurina al compartimento intracelular.
