Su funci\u00f3n principal es la de actuar como cofactor esencial en el transporte de \u00e1cidos grasos de cadena larga hacia el interior de la mitocondria, donde tras la \u00edY-oxidaci\u00f3n de los mismos, se obtiene energ\u00eda metab\u00f3lica. Por tanto, la lc se encuentra mayoritariamente en todos aquellos tejidos que utilizan los \u00e1cidos grasos como fuente principal de energ\u00eda, como es el caso del coraz\u00f3n. Est\u00e1 adquiriendo en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os un mayor inter\u00e9s debido a que est\u00e1 indicado su uso en distintas enfermedades cardiovasculares (como distintas cardiomiopat\u00edas e isquemias mioc\u00e1rdicas), aunque no se conocen con exactitud los mecanismos moleculares por los que media esta acci\u00f3n. por otro lado, la hipertensi\u00f3n arterial es un importante problema de salud que afecta a distintos \u00f3rganos de nuestro organismo. en esta tesis se ha estudiado el efecto cardioprotector de la la l-carnitina en ratas con hipertensi\u00f3n inducida por la administraci\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica de l-name (n-nitro-l-arginina metil \u00e9ster).  los resultados muestran una disminuci\u00f3n significativa de las cifras de la presi\u00f3n arterial, as\u00ed como
