Las c\u00e9lulas madre hematopoy\u00e9ticas pluripotenciales aparecen por primera vez en el saco uterino a las 2,5-3 semanas de edad gestacional y emigran al h\u00edgado fetal en la 4\u00aa-5\u00aa semana de gestaci\u00f3n, el cual se convierte en el sitio donde se produce la mayor parte de la hematopoyesis a las 5-6 semanas de gestaci\u00f3n. De la 5\u00aa-10\u00aa semana de gestaci\u00f3n, el h\u00edgado sufre un dram\u00e1tico incremento en su tama\u00f1o seg\u00fan aumenta el n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas nucleadas. Despu\u00e9s, las c\u00e9lulas pluripotenciales residen en la m\u00e9dula \u00f3sea, donde permanecen durante toda la vida. Estos progenitores tempranos son capaces de proliferar, pero apenas son capaces de diferenciarse. Las c\u00e9lulas madre linfocitarias aparecen a partir de estas c\u00e9lulas precursoras y dan lugar a los linfocitos t, b o nk (natural killer o asesinos naturales), seg\u00fan los \u00f3rganos o tejidos a los cuales se dirijan las c\u00e9lulas madre (figura 1.1). El desarrollo de los \u00f3rganos linf\u00e1ticos primarios (timo y m\u00e9dula \u00f3sea) comienza en la mitad del primer trimestre de gestaci\u00f3n y evoluciona con rapidez; los \u00f3rganos linf\u00e1ticos secundarios (bazo, ganglios linf\u00e1ticos, am\u00edgdalas, placas de peyer y l\u00e1mina propia) se desarrollan poco despu\u00e9s. Estos \u00f3rganos contin\u00faan sirviendo de zonas de diferenciaci\u00f3n de los linfocitos t, b y nk a partir de las c\u00e9lulas madre a lo largo de la vida.
