Debido a que los tiempos de experimentacion son largos y a que no existe acumulacion de hormona en el interior celular, estos efectos parecen ser debidos a cambios en la sintesis de prl, a un nivel post-transcripcional o post-traduccional, ya que la transcripcion del gen de dicha hormona no se modifica medida por ensayos de expresion transitoria. Por otra parte, el efecto que ejerce el colesterol sobre la secrecion de prl no es debido a los cambios que produce en la actividad hidroxi-metil-glutaril-(hmg-) coa reductasa, enzima que regula la biosintesis del colesterol, ya que el 25-hidroxi colesterol, que inhibe al mismo nivel que el colesterol dicha actividad, no varia ni la sintesis ni la secrecion de prl. Ademas, la lovastatina, un inhibidor competitivo de la hmg-coa reductasa que suprime completamente la sintesis de mevalonato, principal precursor del colesterol y de otros compuestos no esteroideos involucrados en la transmision de se\u00f1ales intracelulares, produce una disminucion, tanto de la sintesis, como de la secrecion de prl y de gh. La adicion de peque\u00f1as cantidades de mevalonato al medio revierte este efecto, lo que indica que la lovastatina afecta a la secrecion de ambas hormonas como consecuencia de la falta de
