Sus c\u00e9lulas gl\u00f3micas son un receptor sensorial de tipo secunda-rio, estimulado por la disminuci\u00f3n de la presi\u00f3n de o2 arterial, que  forman parte de las estructuras anat\u00f3micas que sustentan el reflejo ventilatorio hip\u00f3xico, que determina la respuesta r\u00e1pida a las situaciones de hipoxia aguda. Pese a su peque\u00f1o tama\u00f1o, poseen un flujo vascular  superior al del enc\u00e9falo y expresan tantas sustancias neuroqu\u00edmicas como \u00e9l. Sufren notables transformaciones en las situaciones de hipoxia cr\u00f3nica o inter-mitente, como, la altitud, o las enfermedades respiratorias o cardiovascu-lares que causan hipoxia cr\u00f3nica. Menos conocidos son sus modificacio-nes con la edad, cuyo estudio constituyen el objetivo del presente traba-jo. Se estudiaron  los compartimentos celular y extracelular del cuerpo carot\u00eddeo humano, en individuos de ambos sexos, con edades entre los 20 y 86 a\u00f1os (n=25). Mediante tinciones histol\u00f3gicas cl\u00e1sicas e inmu-nohistoqu\u00edmica  cromogranina a, prote\u00edna s-100, enolasa neuronal es-pec\u00edfica, calretinina, c-kit, col\u00e1geno iv . con el envejecimiento, de manera m\u00e1s intensa a partir de la sexta d\u00e9cada, sin diferencias entre ambos sexos, el n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas tipo i disminu\u00eda. Paralelamente se reduc\u00eda el lecho vascular, y las fibras ner-viosas sufr\u00edan una fragmentaci\u00f3n intensa y se reorganizaban en l\u00e1minas conc\u00e9ntricas en torno a los nidos celulares en degeneraci\u00f3n. Estas altera-ciones se acompa\u00f1aban de una fibrosis intensa, que determinaba un en-grosamiento de las membranas basales perivaculares y perineurales, y un incremento de la sustancia amorfa pas positiva. Tambi\u00e9n las fibras de col\u00e1geno se desestructuraban al fibrosarse, disgreg\u00e1ndose la c\u00e1psula y los tabiques interlobulares, quedando dispersos en los l\u00f3bulos carot\u00eddeos. La organizaci\u00f3n conc\u00e9ntrica, en tornos a los nidos celulares en regresi\u00f3n, de vasos, nervios y c\u00e9lulas tipo ii, determinaban la imagen en \u00abcapa de cebollas\u00bb  que mostraban los l\u00f3bulos. Las alteraciones en la estructura del cuerpo carot\u00eddeo conforme avanza la edad, podr\u00edan estar relacionadas con la menor respuesta frente a las alteraciones respiratorias conocidas en los pacientes de m\u00e1s edad. Igualmente, como se\u00f1alan numerosas in-vestigaciones, las alteraciones sufridas por el lecho vascular carot\u00eddeo, podr\u00edan contribuir al agravamiento de patolog\u00edas hipertensivas y
