Se han identificado 4 miembros (ae1, ae2, ae3, y ae0) y se piensa que participan en la regulacion del ph intracelular y en la generacion de flujos hidroinicos a las secreciones. Nuestro grupo ha observado una disminucion de los niveles de mrna del ae2 en pacientes con cirrosis biliar primaria (cbp).  hemos producido y caracterizado anticuerpos monoclonales contra la proteina humana ae1 y contra peptidos sinteticos correspondientes a secuencias de las proteinas ae1 y ae2. En inmunohistoquimica de higado, el anticuerpo monoclonal contra ae2 ti\u00f1e las membranas apicales de hepatocitos y de conductos terminales e interlobulillares.  usando el anticuerpo monoclonal contra ae2 hemos evaluado la inmunorreactividad ae2 en varias situaciones patologicas del higado humano (analizamos 62 biopsias hepaticas por inmunoperoxidasa indirecta). La inmunorreactividad se valoro de 0 a 3 y para los analisis estadisticos utilizamos las pruebas de kruskal-wallis y mann-whitney. La inmunorreactividad ae2 resulto estar significativamente disminuida en canaliculos y conductos biliares del grupo de 13 biopsias hepaticas de pacientes con cbp comparado con tres grupos de biopsias control:  (1) 7 higados normales, (ii) 13 higados con enfermedades colestaticas diferentes a la cbp, y (iii) 17 higados con cirrosis diferente a la cbp.
