Esta y otras especies de mohos producen \u00e1cido ciclopiaz\u00f3nico (acp). Se trata de un \u00e1cido indol tetr\u00e1mico producido adem\u00e1s de por p. Commune por numerosas especies de los g\u00e9neros penicillium y aspergillus. Esta micotoxina tiene efecto toxig\u00e9nico debido a su capacidad para inhibir de forma potente y selectiva el transporte de calcio intracelular, a trav\u00e9s del enzima atpasa-ca2+, en el ret\u00edculo sarcopl\u00e1smico. Los signos cl\u00ednicos de la toxicidad del acp incluyen diarrea, anorexia, temblores e incluso la muerte. Diferentes an\u00e1lisis histopatol\u00f3gicos han mostrado efectos degenerativos y necrosis de higado, bazo, p\u00e1ncreas, glandulas salivares y m\u00fasculos en animales de experimentaci\u00f3n inoculados con esta micotoxina. Para evitar la presencia de los mohos productores de esta micotoxina en alimentos madurados es necesario combinar estrategias de utilizaci\u00f3n de cultivos iniciadores de mohos no toxig\u00e9nicos
