La posibilidad de emplear compost de residuos s\u00f3lidos urbanos (mswc) como substrato de cultivo fue comparado con la popular y tan ampliamente utilizada turba sphagnum. Con el fin de determinar el medio de cultivo \u00f3ptimo para producci\u00f3n de plantas de tomate (lycopersicum esculentum mill. \u00abAtletico\u00bb) y mel\u00f3n (cucumis melo l. \u00aberos\u00bb), se realizaron diferentes mezclas de substratos formuladas con turba negra (bp), turba rubia (wp), fibra de coco, compost de residuos s\u00f3lidos urbanos y perlita. Las mezclas usadas fueron: bp (65%) + wp (30%) + perlita (5%), bp (65%) + mswc (30%) + perlita (5%), wp (65%) + bp (30%) + perlita (5%), wp (65%) + mswc (30%) + perlita (5%), mswc (65%) + wp (30%) + perlita (5%), mswc (95%) + perlita (5%) y mswc (50%) + fibra de coco (50%). El crecimiento de las plantas en semillero tuvo una duraci\u00f3n de 40 d\u00edas, periodo durante el cual no se fertiliz\u00f3 en ning\u00fan momento. Se midieron diferentes \u00edndices para determinar la calidad de planta producida, obteni\u00e9ndose que la mayor parte de estos \u00edndices fueron significativos en funci\u00f3n de la mezcla de cultivo empleada. Se puede concluir que el compost de rsu de \u00abcalidad\u00bb puede ser usado como componente en la formulaci\u00f3n de mezclas con turbas para la producci\u00f3n de plantas de tomate y mel\u00f3n,
