La adopci\u00f3n por el consejo de europa de la directiva 94\/45\/ce de 22 de septiembre de 1994 sobre la constituci\u00f3n de un comit\u00e9 de empresa europeo o de un procedimiento de informaci\u00f3n y consulta a los trabajadores en las empresas y grupos de empresas de dimensi\u00f3n comunitaria ha tenido como consecuencia la puesta en marcha de comit\u00e9s de empresa europeos en 784 empresas, seg\u00fan el european trade union institute correspondientes a 2006. La informaci\u00f3n y consulta a los trabajadores europeos es un producto del esfuerzo regulador llevado a cabo por las instituciones comunitarias, con el objetivo de desarrollar un marco de est\u00e1ndares laborales y sociales comunes que acompa\u00f1e al proceso de integraci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica a nivel regional. en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas se han producido grandes transformaciones en el mundo del trabajo. La creaci\u00f3n de grandes \u00e1reas econ\u00f3micas (entre ellas la propia uni\u00f3n europea) ha facilitado la concentraci\u00f3n de los procesos corporativos de toma de decisiones. La extensi\u00f3n de las nuevas tecnolog\u00edas de la comunicaci\u00f3n constituye un factor determinante en esta concentraci\u00f3n, puesto que ha permitido que las direcciones de las empresas dejen de pensar en sus operaciones en t\u00e9rminos esencialmente nacionales y puedan pasar a gestionarlas de forma crecientemente transnacional. La toma de decisiones corporativas se ha convertido en un proceso que rebasa los l\u00edmites nacionales, introduciendo con ello nuevas tensiones en las relaciones laborales de empresa. La informaci\u00f3n y consulta a escala europea adquiere una gran relevancia bajo estas nuevas condiciones, puesto que esta constituye la principal iniciativa dirigida a asegurar la representaci\u00f3n de los intereses de los trabajadores en la empresa transnacional. los comit\u00e9s de empresa europeos han sido objeto de intenso inter\u00e9s acad\u00e9mico en los \u00faltimos tiempos. Un significativo n\u00famero de investigaciones han abordado el estudio de estos \u00f3rganos de informaci\u00f3n y consulta desde una perspectiva cuantitativa o legal. no obstante, en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os ha hecho su aparici\u00f3n una nueva corriente de investigaci\u00f3n cualitativa que, haciendo uso de una metodolog\u00eda de estudio de caso, ha, examinado y comparar experiencias individuales de informaci\u00f3n y consulta a los trabajadores en empresas europeas. La tesis doctoral ofrecer una contribuci\u00f3n a esta corriente de investigaci\u00f3n, a trav\u00e9s de la aplicaci\u00f3n de sus herramientas conceptuales y metodol\u00f3gicas y de la ampliaci\u00f3n de las bases existentes de conocimiento emp\u00edrico. Para ello, se han seleccionado tres ejemplos de comit\u00e9 de empresa europeo, que corresponden a las empresas transnacionales thyssenkrupp, saint gobain y arcelor. El objetivo de la investigaci\u00f3n es analizar el proceso de aparici\u00f3n y consolidaci\u00f3n de la informaci\u00f3n y consulta europea en las tres empresas, examinar los factores que condicionan su pr\u00e1ctica diferencial y ofrecer un an\u00e1lisis sociol\u00f3gico del impactote los comit\u00e9s de empresa europeos sobre las relaciones laborales de empresa.   abstract (english)  information and consultation of workers in transnational firms with operations in the european union has become a central process for european industrial relations. The adoption of the council directive 94\/45\/ec of 22 september 1994 on the establishment of a european works council or a procedure in community-scale undertakings and community-scale groups undertakings for the purposes of informing and consulting employees has brought about the consolidation of such practices in 784 multinational firms with operations in the european union (european trade union institute, data from 2006). Information and consultation of european workers results from the regulatory effort made by community institutions to develop a common labour and social standards in parallel to the process of economic integration at regional level. in the last two decades there have been major transformations in the world of labour. The creation of transnational economic areas (i.E. The european union) has brought about the concentration of corporate decision-making. The spreading of the new technologies of information and communication has been also a decisive factor for this concentration, since they provide management with tools to run and (re)think firms operations at a transnational level. The transformation of corporate decision making into a transnational process has put strain on firm level industrial relations. Information and consultation at european level takes on a high relevance under these circumstances. the research has focussed on european works councils from a legal or a quantitative perspective. However, a new stream of research has arisen in recent times. Qualitative research on european works councils, based on case-study methodology, examines and compares individual experiences of workers in transnational firm. The phd thesis aims at contributing to this stream of research. It developes the methodological tools and widenes the existent basis of empirical knowledge on european works councils. Three examples of information and consultation of european workers have been selected for this purpose: thyssenkrupp, saint gobain and arcelor. The objective is to evaluate the consolidation of information and consultation of workers at transnational level in the three firms, to examinate the factors which condition the practice of european
