Est\u00e1 catalogada en peligro de extinci\u00f3n y el estado actual del conocimiento es a\u00fan insuficiente para repoblar o restaurar estos bosques. Por ello, se describi\u00f3 su autoecolog\u00eda y se estudiaron algunos factores relacionados con su distribuci\u00f3n espacial, temporal y potencial; con las caracter\u00edsticas del material forestal de reproducci\u00f3n; con estrategias de germinaci\u00f3n y cultivo de plantas en vivero; y con el establecimiento de plantaciones. Los resultados muestran que es una especie que tiene un comportamiento diferente a las otras de su g\u00e9nero presentes en su \u00e1rea de distribuci\u00f3n natural. En general, las caracter\u00edsticas de las semillas de diferentes procedencias son homog\u00e9neas, aunque las del origen geogr\u00e1fico m\u00e1s meridional tienden a ser diferentes. La variaci\u00f3n espacial y temporal muestra que el recurso contin\u00faa retrocediendo por causas de origen antropog\u00e9nico (actualmente existen 314 ha); sin embargo, la tasa de deforestaci\u00f3n no es tan cr\u00edtica como la se\u00f1alada a fines del siglo xx. Existe una superficie potencial, con la cual se podr\u00eda incrementar el recurso. Las semillas tienen latencia end\u00f3gena, no muy profunda, la que puede superarse con tratamientos de ga3 (100 ppm durante 24 horas) y estratificaci\u00f3n fr\u00eda (4\u00c2\u00bac durante 30 d\u00edas). Se pueden obtener plantas de caracter\u00edsticas adecuadas para la forestaci\u00f3n en una temporada y para ello es aconsejable considerar el empleo de un fertilizante de entrega lenta.
