Tanto mrp1, mrp3, mrp4 como bcrp parecen tener un papel importante en la transferencia placentaria de \u00e1cidos biliares. Sin embargo, a diferencia del h\u00edgado, bsep no juega un papel relevante en la placenta. La inmunolocalizaci\u00f3n de oatp1b1 y oatp1b3 en el endotelio capilar de las vellosidades cori\u00f3nicas en la placenta humana a t\u00e9rmino sugiere que podr\u00edan participar en la captaci\u00f3n de aniones org\u00e1nicos desde la sangre fetal.  por otra parte, en la placenta de rata se determin\u00f3 que varias isoformas de oatps, en especial oatp1a1, participan en el transporte transplacentario de pigmentos biliares fetales como la biliverdina. Adem\u00e1s, los estudios realizados en el modelo experimental de \u00abplacenta de rata perfundida in situ\u00bb y la determinaci\u00f3n de la expresi\u00f3n en la placenta de la enzima biliverdina reductasa ixa, responsable de la reducci\u00f3n de biliverdina en bilirrubina, revel\u00f3 que la mayor parte de la biliverdina captada por la placenta es transformada en bilirrubina antes de ser transferida a la circulaci\u00f3n materna. finalmente, para dilucidar aspectos funcionales de prote\u00ednas abc presentes en el trofoblasto humano se desarroll\u00f3 una variante del sistema de expresi\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas de membrana en oocitos de xenopus laevis basado en la coexpresi\u00f3n de transportadores abc y oatp. Este modelo permiti\u00f3 revelar la capacidad de bcrp para transportar \u00e1cidos biliares primarios (libres y conjugados) y sulfatados, por lo que el papel fisiol\u00f3gico de bcrp en la placenta y
