No obstante, un estudio publicado en el a\u00f1o 2004 propone que la inflamaci\u00f3n es secundaria a una muerte inicial de oligodendrocitos (barnett y prineas, 2004). Una de las causas de la muerte oligodendroglial es la excitotoxicidad causada por el amino\u00e1cido excitatorio glutamato liberado al medio extracelular en condiciones patol\u00f3gicas como hipoxias e isquemias (matute y cols., 2001). Otro posible candidato en la inducci\u00f3n de la muerte oligodendroglial es el atp extracelular, que a altas concentraciones produce la muerte de estas c\u00e9lulas tanto in vitro como in vivo a trav\u00e9s de los receptores p2x7 que se expresan abundantemente en su superficie (matute y cols., 2007). hemos realizado un estudio de asociaci\u00f3n caso-control en varias fases, primero con un estudio prospectivo en un gran n\u00famero de polimorfismos snp pero una muestra reducida de pacientes, y despu\u00e9s en una muestra mayor para aquellos snps positivos en esa primera fase. Los resultados muestran una asociaci\u00f3n entre la em y el gen que codifica el receptor p2x7, concretamente para el alelo t del nssnp rs17525809 y el haplotipo cg del tandem formado por este y otro
