Es un trastorno que causa retraso mental, macroorquidismo, autismo e hiperactividad; tiene una preValencia de 1\/2500 varones y 1\/4000 mujeres y, actualmente, no existe cura para la enfermedad. en el presente estudio se utiliz\u00f3 el rat\u00f3n nulo del gen fmrl [fmrl-ko) como modelo animal de la enfermedad. Se realizaron estudios de comportamiento, an\u00e1lisis de expresi\u00f3n g\u00e9nica en \u00e1reas cerebrales, valoraciones del estado oxidativo en cerebro y test\u00edculo, an\u00e1lisis de los niveles de glucocorticoides en suero y ensayos cr\u00f3nicos experimentales con sustancias antioxidantes. el rat\u00f3n fmrl-ko muestra alteraciones comportamentales que sugieren anomal\u00edas en \u00e1reas implicadas en aprendizaje y memoria, como la corteza cerebral, la am\u00edgdala y el hipocampo, y en el eje hpa. estos animales muestran tambi\u00e9n estr\u00e9s oxidativo en cerebro y test\u00edculos, dos de los \u00f3rganos m\u00e1s afectados en el sxf. Adem\u00e1s, los animales fmrl-ko muestran cambios de expresi\u00f3n g\u00e9nica en regiones implicadas en tareas cognitivas en genes relacionados con el complejo nadph oxidasa y en genes con funci\u00f3n antioxidante. los tratamientos cr\u00f3nicos con antioxidantes como la melatonina, la vitamina e o la combinaci\u00f3n vitamina e+n-acetilciste\u00edna revierten el estr\u00e9s oxidativo en cerebro y test\u00edculos y normalizan los niveles plasm\u00e1ticos de corticosterona. Adem\u00e1s, estos tratamientos cr\u00f3nicos tambi\u00e9n revierten anomal\u00edas comportamentales como la hiperactividad, la ansiolisis y los d\u00e9ficits en aprendizaje y memoria, sugiriendo que el tratamiento con estas sustancias es beneficioso en el modelo animal del s\u00edndrome y deber\u00eda ser ensayado en los enfermos afectados por el s\u00edndrome x
