Si bien es cierto que no conocemos con exactitud su fecha de composici\u00f3n ni de representaci\u00f3n, algunas caracter\u00edsticas parecen confirmarlo como texto temprano, como por ejemplo que no alcance los 1500 versos o que de las anotaciones para su escenificaci\u00f3n se deduzca que est\u00e1 pensado para dos carros (anterior, por tanto, a 1646). tenemos noticia de varias puestas en escena de este auto. En el siglo xvii se represent\u00f3 en sevilla (1651) y en lima (1672). En el siglo xviii se documentan al menos seis nuevas representaciones: en 1714, 1728, 1738, 1750, 1756 y 1762. Incluso contamos con tres textos de compa\u00f1\u00eda, aunque el auto que se lee en estos tres manuscritos ha sido ampliado \u00c2\u00abpara ponerle en la proporci\u00f3n que se estila\u00c2\u00bb. Tambi\u00e9n durante el pasado siglo el pleito ha sido un auto afortunado: se ha representado por lo menos en nueve ocasiones.  desde su primera representaci\u00f3n documentada (sevilla, 1651) hasta la \u00faltima (par\u00eds y villeurbanne, 2004) este auto sacramental refleja a trav\u00e9s de sus diferentes montajes c\u00f3mo ha ido evolucionando el gusto del p\u00fablico: la sencillez primigenia de los dos carros dio paso a la adaptaci\u00f3n para su escenificaci\u00f3n sobre cuatro carros; antonio de zamora ampli\u00f3 el texto, incluy\u00f3 nuevos personajes y nuevas escenas, creci\u00f3 el protagonismo de la m\u00fasica y la espectacularidad esc\u00e9nica. En el siglo xx, la especial coyuntura del gobierno de franco propici\u00f3 m\u00e1s a\u00fan el fasto esc\u00e9nico. Pero en el \u00faltimo tercio del siglo las aguas empiezan a volver a su cauce. El primer s\u00edntoma es la recuperaci\u00f3n del texto original. El final del camino, al menos hasta hoy, lo marca la representaci\u00f3n francesa: la escena se ha reducido a su m\u00ednima expresi\u00f3n, la caracterizaci\u00f3n de los personajes es sobria y ajena a l\u00edmites temporales.
