Cada una de ellas pretendia solucionar problemas que la anterior dejaba sin resolver. El conductismo logico pretendia explicar la mente traduciendo las expresiones en aparecieran terminos mentales a otras en que aparecieran terminos conductuales, erradicando asi el mito cartesiano del fantasma en la maquina. Pero fue incapaz de dar cuenta del caracter causal de lo mental. La teoria de la identidad psicofisica pretendio dar cuenta del mismo reduciendo lo mental a lo cerebral. Pero cayo en un \u00abchovinismo\u00bb insostenible. La teoria funcionalista de la mente se presento como sintesis que recogiera lo mejor de las teorias anteriores resolviendo al mismo tiempo los problemas que el conductismo logico y la teoria de la identidad psicofisica dejaban sin resolver. Pero proto se puso de manifiesto que la teoria funcionalista dejaba a su vez sin explicar el caracter cualitativo de lo mental y era incapaz de proporcionar una teoria del contenido
