En concreto, es un inhibidor natural del activador tisular del plasmin\u00f3geno (tpa) que se expresa casi exclusivamente en el sistema nervioso central, a nivel neuronal. Estudios experimentales de isquemia cerebral han demostrado la formaci\u00f3n transitoria de complejos neuroserpina-tpa que regulan la permeabilidad entre el compartimento vascular y el par\u00e9nquima cerebral, as\u00ed como la funci\u00f3n neuroprotectora de la neuroserpina administrada intracerebralmente. El t-pa posee actividad fibrinol\u00edtica, por ello es utilizado en cl\u00ednica humana, con una ventana terap\u00e9utica de tres horas, para la tromb\u00f3lisis del co\u00e1gulo causante del infarto cerebral, mejorando el pron\u00f3stico funcional de los pacientes. Sin embargo, se sabe que posee algunos efectos perjudiciales entre los que se encuentra el riesgo de transformaci\u00f3n hemorr\u00e1gica.
