Ayensa, despues de estudiar el descrubrimiento de la poesia popular griega en el siglo xix y de comentar brevemente la teoria de s.Kiriakidis sobre el origen de las baladas neogriegas, lleva a cabo un estudio formal de dichas baladas en relacion con el repertorio akritico y la tecnica de los improvisadores chipriotas. Sin embargo, la la parte esencial del trabajo es un estudio tematico y comparativo de ocho baladas que se relacionan con el ciclo de los parientes asesinos, la mujer adultera y la novia abandonada. De este modo, el sr. Ayensa examina las ocho composiciones anteriormente referidas desde el punto de vista sociologico y comparativo, estableciendo posibles afinidades geneticas con canciones parecidas del area hispanica, francesa e italiana. Asimismo, una traduccion de 25 baladas, acompa\u00f1adas de extensas notas explicativas, ocupa las paginas 215-326. A modo de apendice figuran dos breves trabajos en los que su autor analiza el recuerdo dejado por la compa\u00f1ia catalana de los almogavares en la memoria colectiva del pueblo griego y las competiciones poeticas de los improvisadores chipriotas y mallorquines.
