Bp-23 fue aislada a partir de un cultivo de enriquecimiento realizado a partir de una muestra de suelo de arrozal. Dicha cepa muestra una elevada actividad xilanasa extracelular, asi como una notable actividad sobre poligalacturonato y cmc. El sistema xilanolitico de la cepa consta, al menos, de cuatro bandas proteicas detectadas en geles de sds-page.  una de estas proteinas, la xilanasa a, fue purificada a homogeneidad y caracterizada. Su temperatura y ph optimos son de 50 grados c y 5,5 respectivamente. Muestra una elevada estabilidad frente a ph alcalino y una buena estabilidad a temperaturas de hasta 55 grados c. La secuencia de los cuarenta primeros aminoacidos del extremo amino-terminal fue determinada y la xilanasa mostro homolog\u00eda con xilanasas de la familia f. La xilanasa a fue utilizada en estudios de blanqueo de la pasta de papel, mostrando una elevada efectividad en este proceso. El tratamiento con la xilanasa provoco en la pasta tratada incrementos de mas de una unidad iso de blancura respecto al control.  se realizo tambien una genoteca de la cepa bacillus sp.  bp-23 en escherichia coli y se obtuvieron cinco clones recombinantes que codificaban actividades degradadoras de polimeros vegetales: dos xilanasas, dos celulasas y una pectinasa.
