Phd dissertation abstract the objective of this dissertation is to analyze the life, thought, and literary-journalistic work published in book form and translated from polish to spanish of the late journalist and writer, ryszard kapu¿ciñski. In spite of being an acclaimed figure, recognized and admired not only in poland, his country of origin, but also in other european countries and in america, certain aspects of his life, thought, and work continue to be a less researched topic. We specifically refer to the origins and professional development of kapu¿ciñski, as well as the pillars of his personal and fieldwork philosophy, and the influences of and from his work. This research intends on presenting the consideration and valorization of our author, especially in poland, with regards to his upbringing as a war refuge, his first encounters with poetry and journalism, and his travels as a war correspondent, until becoming one of the best and most controversial chroniclers of the 20th century. The structure of this dissertation is tripartite. The first part is dedicated to this author¿s biography and not only traces his steps, but also investigates many of the accusations that have been made against him with relation to his collaboration with the polish secret services, his personal life, and discrepancies with his journalistic labor. The second is dedicated to presenting his journalistic influences as part of a literary tradition pertaining to the polish school of reportage, and the interdisciplinary genre of collage journalism that he created. The third will analyze kapu¿ciñski¿s theoretical and philosophical views directly influenced by thinkers such as french philosopher, emmanuel lévinas and his postulations regarding the other, as well as other anthropological theories established by polish-british social anthropologist, bronis³aw malinowski, that influenced his field methodology, and lastly, the greek historian herodotus, who also shaped his framework as a reporter, and is considered to be his symbolic teacher. key words: literary journalism, ryszard kapu¿ciñski, polish school of reportage, social anthropology, field work, the other.
